The Hermès family, originally Hermes Like Louis Vuitton Protestant Germans, settled in France in 1828. Subsequently, Émile-Maurice was granted the exclusive rights to use the zipper for leather goods and clothing and, thus, became the first to introduce the device in France. And, in 1918, the first leather golf jacket with a zipper, made by Hermès, was introduced. It was followed by Hermès's first leather garment, a zippered golfing jacket for the Prince of Wales. Named after its exclusive use of the zipper, the mechanism was called the fermature Hermès (the Hermès fastener).

Throughout the 1920s when he was the sole head of the firm, Émile-Maurice added an accessory collection. And he groomed his three sons-in-law (Robert Dumas, Jean-René Guerrand and Francis Puech) as business partners

This was a year of tremendous growth and change for Bikes for Kids.  During the past year, 58 voluneers logged over 4200 total hours of shop time, providing 647 bikes though our ageny partners.  This was a 44% growth over last year when 448 bikes were delivered.  Another first was being able to provide some new bikes for kids this Christmas.  Though a generous grant and purchasing assistance from the Twin Lakes Fred Meyer store, we were able to acquire and assemble 28 new bikes that were given through family support groups and the Federal Way Multi-Service Center Christmas House.  Thanks to the Tacoma Wheelman Club, new helmets were provided at Christmas House for the first time.  Our many thanks to the many faithful volunteers and agencies which have made this our most successful year yet.  Don C.

A few weekends ago Tim mentioned some cyclists that were traveling around the world and they were stopping in Federal Way that Sunday. My wife and I went to 99 Bottles to meet them. The goal of John and Kate's bike trip is to  “… figure out how good food is produced, and why people should choose it over “conventionally produced” food. We want to help bridge the gap between the passionate farmer and the nervous but open-minded consumer. We will also be promoting good food and healthy lifestyles. We are hoping that our trip and the efforts we are making will encourage people to think twice about what they put on their plate and into their mouths”.

Since we only have a cat at home these days, we invited them to stay the night at our place. It gave them a place to shower, a warm bed, internet and a chance to charge up their electronics. They travel self contained, tent, stove, sleeping bags, rain gear, a laptop, everything is loaded on thier bikes. Bike and gear weighs over 80 lbs each. They started on the East coast in June.

They left the next morning heading for Roy and on to Oregon and California.

Bikes for Kids volunteers delivered 27 bicycles, misc. parts, and 100+ wheels  to "The Village Bicycle Project" drop off site in Seattle today.  Over 100 adult bikes have been delivered to VBP this year.  These bikes will be loaded on containers and are destined for Sierra Leone.  Bikes sent in previous years have gone to Ghana.   More information on the Village Bicycle Project can be found on their website:  http://villagebicycleproject.org

The Sept. 17th Federal Way recycle event was another huge success.  We had a great turnout with 2 trailers and 4 volunteers collecting and delivering bikes from the recycle event and several volunteers working back at the shop, sorting, cleaning and preparing the bikes for storage.  A total of 108 bikes were collected, some gleaned for parts but most to be refurbished and distributed through our partner charitable agencies.  Thanks to the many volunteers that made this day possilbe and to the City of Federal Way for including us in this event..
